CrystaSulf Direct Treatment of Sour Gas

Trouble-free sulfur recovery for small to mid-sized applications such as natural gas, EOR gas, refinery fuel gas, refinery offgas, geothermal vent gas, and others.

Recovering sulfur from gas streams that contain 0.2 to 25 LTPD of sulfur has historically been problematic. In this size range, the operating costs of throw-away H2S scavenging chemicals are too high, and traditional amine/Claus approaches are unwieldy and capital intensive.

Aqueous-iron redox systems showed promise in this range, but often proved unacceptable because of their operating problems. CrystaSulfSM, a new breakthrough sulfur recovery technology, can remove sulfur economically without the operating problems of aqueous-iron systems.

Using a gentle SO2 oxidant, CrystaSulf converts inlet H2S to elemental sulfur. Elemental sulfur is soluble in CrystaSulf solution; thus, there is no danger of sulfur plugging high-pressure equipment that plagues aqueous-iron systems.

Meeting pipeline H2S specifications is easy, and CO2 has been shown to have no effect on the CrystaSulf process.

Easy control of H2S removal

  • Solution has buffering capacity (changes happen slowly, upsets are moderated)
  • Can track/measure dissolved species that correlate directly with removal
