When it comes right down to it, there aren't many tail gas treating processes that can get your sulfur recovery up to 99.8% or higher as is frequently required by regulation. The traditional choice for extremely high recovery has been H2S absorption and recycle processes (with their reducing gas generator, hydrogenation reactor, quench, and amine system).

Capital costs for this type of tail gas treatment are often as high if not higher than the Claus unit itself. In addition, recycling H2S and CO2 back to the Claus reaction furnace adds unnecessary load.
